Francisco Sanchez Stockton Shooting: Father Killed Outside Downtown Cineplex on April 25, 2014
STOCKTON, Calif. — A night in downtown Stockton turned deadly on April 25, 2014, when Francisco Sanchez was shot outside the City Centre Theatre, also known in reports as the Downtown Stockton Cineplex.
KCRA reported that Sanchez was shot several times outside the theater. CBS Sacramento later identified him as a 30-year-old Stockton resident, a husband, and a father of a 5-year-old child.
The case drew attention because of where it happened. The shooting occurred near a popular downtown entertainment area, close to the theater dome and nearby restaurants. Investigators later released surveillance video and asked the public to help identify people connected to the case.
Police Released Surveillance Video After The Shooting
After the shooting, Stockton police detectives asked the public for tips. KCRA reported that investigators released video showing several people they believed could be connected to the deadly shooting. Police also said there was a reward of up to $10,000 for information.
According to CBS Sacramento, investigators believed Sanchez was shot after a confrontation and fight under the cineplex dome. Surveillance footage reportedly showed men entering Misaki Japanese Restaurant at the plaza, where investigators believed the argument may have started.
Francisco Sanchez’s Wife Asked The Public For Help
The case became even more emotional when Sanchez’s wife publicly pleaded for answers. KCRA reported that Ashley Sanchez asked anyone with information to come forward after her husband was killed.
Her plea helped put a human face on the case. This was not just another crime statistic in Stockton. A family lost a husband and father, and police said they needed the community’s help to move the case forward.
Three People Of Interest Were Later Named
In May 2014, police named three people of interest in the shooting death of Francisco Sanchez.
KCRA reported that Michael Moreno and Jimmie Zavala, both 24, and Miguel Gallardo, 19, were named as people of interest. Investigators said they were wanted for questioning.
KCRA also reported that investigators did not believe Sanchez had gang ties. However, police described Gallardo and Zavala as known gang members.
CBS Sacramento also reported that Zavala and Gallardo were documented gang members and that all three men were wanted in connection with the April 25 murder investigation.
Michael Moreno Was Later Named As The Primary Suspect
About one month after the shooting, police released another update.
KCRA reported that Stockton police named Michael Moreno as the primary suspect wanted for the alleged killing of Francisco Sanchez outside the Downtown Cineplex. Police also said Moreno associated with known gang members and should be considered armed and dangerous.
CBS Sacramento reported the same day that Moreno had already been identified as a person of interest before investigators named him as the primary suspect.
Later Iowa Arrest Brought New Attention To The Case
Months later, CBS Sacramento reported that Michael Moreno was arrested in Iowa. According to that report, police said Moreno was identified as the primary suspect in the April 25 shooting and was arrested at a Mason City home in an unrelated methamphetamine case.
CBS reported that Stockton investigators hoped the Iowa arrest would help reopen momentum in the homicide investigation and possibly bring Moreno back to California.
A later U.S. Department of Justice release reported that Michael Angelo Sanchez Moreno of Stockton pleaded guilty in a federal meth-distribution conspiracy and received a 120-month federal prison sentence. That DOJ release focused on the Iowa drug case and did not state a California homicide conviction in the Francisco Sanchez case.
Why This Case Still Stands Out
The Francisco Sanchez case stands out because it happened in a public downtown space where families and moviegoers gathered. Reports described people continuing to enter the theater as the tragedy unfolded nearby.
The case also raised concerns because police said Sanchez did not appear to have gang ties, while some people connected to the investigation were described by police as having gang connections.
For Stockton, the case became another painful reminder of how quickly violence can reach public spaces. For Sanchez’s family, it was the loss of a husband and father whose wife publicly asked for justice.
