Hilmar Man Arrested After Gas Station Shooting, Authorities Say
HILMAR, CA — A 21-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following a shooting Thursday evening at a local gas station, law enforcement officials reported.
According to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Kwik Serv Gas Station at 8480 Lander Avenue shortly after 7:26 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2026, after receiving reports of gunfire in the area.
What Happened at the Gas Station
Investigators say the shooting stemmed from an argument involving multiple individuals at the gas station parking area. The victim was reportedly seated inside his vehicle when the altercation escalated and shots were fired.
The person struck by the gunfire was transported himself to a local area hospital, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury to his forehead. Officials say no additional victims were identified at the scene.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
Deputies located the suspected gunman a short time after the incident at a nearby residence in Hilmar. He was identified as Cesar Reynoso Deluna, age 21.
During the arrest, authorities also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, according to sheriff’s office reports. Deluna was subsequently booked into the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Jail on an attempted murder charge.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials describe the incident as isolated, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to the confrontation. No additional suspects have been publicly identified, and sheriff’s deputies have urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has related information to contact the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.
