Merced DUI Crash, Fatal Collision, Texas Woman Sentenced to 10 Years
A Texas woman has been sentenced to more than 10 years in state prison for a fatal DUI crash in Merced that killed 29-year-old Regino “Regie” Mariscal Jr. The sentencing brings closure to a case that deeply affected the Merced community.
What Happened
The deadly crash happened on May 3, 2025, at the intersection of G Street and East Olive Avenue in Merced. Police reported that Mariscal was riding a motorcycle when an SUV struck him. Authorities later identified the driver as Desiree Rose Gomez of Texas.
As a result of the collision, Mariscal suffered fatal injuries. Investigators determined alcohol impairment played a role in the crash.
Court Ruling and Sentence
Gomez was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI causing injury. This week, a judge sentenced her to 10 years and eight months in state prison.

In the weeks following the crash, loved ones gathered at the intersection where he was killed to hold a candlelight vigil. In addition, RJL launched memorial efforts, including shirts and a scholarship fund, to honor his legacy and continue his work supporting students.
