Mariposa Sword Attack Suspect Arrested After Manhunt
A Mariposa manhunt ended Wednesday after deputies arrested a suspect wanted in connection with an alleged sword attack at Creekside Apartments.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect in local reports as Jonathan Mishael Bays, 41. Deputies said they found him Wednesday morning during a coordinated search operation near known homeless encampments in the area. ABC30 reported that Bays had been wanted after an alleged attack that left 32-year-old Andrew Cooper seriously injured.
The arrest brought an end to several tense days for residents in the small foothill community.
What Deputies Say Happened At Creekside Apartments
The case began late Saturday night at Creekside Terrace Apartments / Creekside Apartments in Mariposa.
According to ABC30, Sheriff Jeremy Briese said Bays was inside an apartment with several people when an argument started. Investigators said Bays allegedly attacked Andrew Cooper with a sword during the confrontation. Deputies later found Cooper with injuries to his head, neck, shoulders, and hands.
Earlier reporting said Bays fled before deputies arrived. Authorities believed he may have left the apartments on foot and headed toward a trail near the county jail area.
Victim Identified As Andrew Cooper
Authorities did not initially release the victim’s name, but a GoFundMe created by Rebecca Cooper identifies the victim as her son, Andrew Cooper, also known as “Coop.” The fundraiser says Andrew is 32 years old and suffered severe injuries after he was struck multiple times with a sharp object later identified as a sword.
The GoFundMe says Andrew was first airlifted to a hospital in Merced for emergency treatment. It says doctors later stabilized him and flew him again to UC Davis Health for emergency surgery. As of the fundraiser update, Andrew remained in the surgical ICU while doctors continued treating his injuries.
The fundraiser says the family is seeking help for travel expenses, medical expenses, air ambulance costs, and other urgent needs connected to Andrew’s recovery.
How The Search Unfolded
The search stretched across multiple days.
ABC30 reported that deputies searched for Bays after the alleged attack and warned the public that he may have been using multiple names, including Michael, Mike, and Aaron. The report said officials believed he was originally from Idaho and had an absconding parole warrant there.
FOX26 reported that deputies searched the area with drones and helicopters. The outlet said investigators believed Bays had last been seen walking away from the apartments on a trail toward the jail. FOX26 also reported that detectives described the case as isolated and said the community was safe after the arrest.
GV Wire reported that deputies had focused part of the search along Highway 49 North from Highway 140 to Frank Wilson Road before Bays was taken into custody.
Suspect Arrested Wednesday Morning
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday morning that Bays was in custody. ABC30 reported that deputies located him during a coordinated operation at a known homeless encampment.
The official Mariposa County arrest and booking report lists Bay, Jonathan Mishael as arrested on May 27, 2026, at 10:21 a.m. at Mariposa Creek Trail. The report lists felony entries for attempted murder and aggravated mayhem.
Those entries reflect the booking report. Court filings, arraignment information, and final charges may change as the case moves forward.
What Investigators Have Confirmed
Investigators have confirmed that deputies responded to Creekside Apartments after reports of a serious assault. Local reports say the victim suffered injuries to the head, neck, shoulder, wrist, hand, or arm area.
Authorities also confirmed that Bays was taken into custody after a multi-day search. The booking report places the arrest at Mariposa Creek Trail on Wednesday morning, May 27.
What Is Not Yet Confirmed
Officials have not released every detail about what led to the confrontation.
The exact sequence inside the apartment remains under investigation. Authorities have also not released a full case report, a complete evidence list, or a detailed court timeline. ABC30 reported that deputies said the investigation remains ongoing.
Because the case remains active, Bays should be described as a suspect or accused unless and until a court reaches a conclusion.
Why This Case Shook Mariposa
Mariposa is a small community, and the search created fear for nearby residents.
ABC30 spoke with residents who said they felt uneasy as the search continued. One resident told the station that people in the area were watching nearby hills and worrying about where the suspect could be hiding.
The case drew even more attention because of the unusual weapon involved, the severity of the victim’s injuries, and the multi-day search that followed.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation continues.
Anyone with information about the case should contact law enforcement. As the case moves forward, officials may release more details about the alleged attack, the evidence, and any future court dates.
