A Fresno Woman Was Found Dead Near Dumpster; A Man She Knew Has Been Arrested
FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno police arrested a man after officers found 52-year-old Jennifer “Michelle” Jones dead near a dumpster in northwest Fresno on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
Detectives arrested 58-year-old Michael Koontz of Fresno three days later. Police described Koontz as an associate of Jones and booked him into the Fresno County Jail on a murder charge. Investigators have not publicly disclosed Jones’s cause of death, a possible motive or the evidence that led to the arrest.
Officers Responded Early Sunday Morning
Officers with the Fresno Police Department’s Northwest Policing District responded around 1 a.m. on July 19 after someone reported a deceased person near Fallbrook and Maroa avenues.
Officers located Jones in the immediate area near a dumpster. Emergency medical personnel arrived and pronounced her dead at the scene. Homicide detectives then took control of the investigation.
Early news reports described Jones as being found inside a dumpster in the 300 block of West Fallbrook Avenue, east of Ingram Avenue. However, Fresno Police later used the more cautious wording that officers located her “near a dumpster.” The exact position where officers found Jones has therefore differed slightly between the initial reporting and the department’s later release.
Detectives Determined Jones Died by Homicide
Homicide detectives examined the scene and determined that Jones had died as the result of a homicide.
Police have not explained how she died. They have also not said whether investigators believe the killing happened near the dumpster or whether someone moved Jones there after her death.
Investigators identified Jones as a Fresno resident. People who knew her told ABC30 that she frequently spent time in the Pinedale area, not far from where officers recovered her body.
Fresno Police Arrest Michael Koontz
Detectives arrested Michael Koontz on Wednesday, July 22. Police said Koontz knew Jones and described the two as associates.
Authorities booked Koontz into the Fresno County Jail on a murder charge. Police have not publicly described the evidence that connected him to Jones’s death or explained how investigators identified him as a suspect.
ABC30 reported that police do not currently believe the homicide resulted from a relationship dispute. However, investigators have not described the exact nature of the association between Jones and Koontz.
An arrest does not equal a conviction. Koontz has not been convicted in connection with Jones’s death.
Police Activity Reported at Another Fresno Property
ABC30 later visited West Beechwood Avenue, where Jones was reportedly believed to have lived. Video obtained by the station showed a significant law-enforcement presence in the neighborhood on the day police arrested Koontz.
Large tarps covered part of the backyard at a home where neighbors said the police activity occurred. An anonymous neighbor also reported seeing someone resist officers and apparently get shocked with a Taser during the operation.
Police have not confirmed that the activity on West Beechwood Avenue involved Koontz or directly connected to Jones’s homicide. Neighbors told ABC30 that they had previously seen Koontz in the area, but investigators have not publicly verified those accounts.
ABC30 also reported that Koontz has a previous criminal history in another state, including an assault conviction. That previous conviction does not establish guilt in the current Fresno investigation.
