On This Day June 15: Billy Wright Fresno Shooting Case

On June 15, 2022, a family argument inside a northwest Fresno home ended in the shooting death of William “Billy” Wright.

Billy Wright was 31 years old. He was a father, a corrections officer, and a former junior college football coach. People who knew him remembered him as a mentor, coach, and positive figure for young athletes across the Central Valley.

Fresno police responded around 11 a.m. to the 4400 block of North Tamera Avenue after a report of a shooting. FOX26 reported that the home was near Shaw and Marks in northwest Fresno.

A Family Visit Turned Deadly

Investigators said Billy had gone to visit family when an argument began between him and his father, William Wright III.

Early reports said the argument escalated during the visit. Police said a handgun became involved, and Billy was shot. A family member then rushed Billy to Community Regional Medical Center. He later died at the hospital.

Police said Wright III stayed at the home after the shooting. Detectives interviewed him at the scene, and authorities later booked him into the Fresno County Jail on a murder charge.

What Court Testimony Later Revealed

As the case moved through court, testimony gave the public more detail about what prosecutors believed happened inside the home before the gunshot.

The Fresno Bee reported that family members had been seated at a kitchen table during a conversation about raising children. Billy’s brother, Blake Wright, testified that the conversation turned into an argument and then became physical.

The defense argued that part of the struggle involved a chokehold and that Wright III said he could not breathe. Prosecutors argued that Wright III left the struggle, got a gun, and returned with a loaded firearm.

ABC30 later reported that jurors heard Wright III’s 911 call during trial. In that call, Wright III said the shooting was accidental.

Billy Wright Was Remembered as More Than a Case File

The case drew attention because Billy Wright was remembered as much more than a name in a court record or police report.

ABC30 reported that Billy worked as a federal correctional officer and coached football at College of the Sequoias and Reedley College. His mother told ABC30 that Billy helped young people get into college, complete paperwork, and gain knowledge.

College of the Sequoias also remembered Billy after his death. The Fresno Bee reported that Billy served as a Student Success Coordinator during the 2018–19 school year and also worked as an assistant football coach that same year. The school said he had recently agreed to return as an assistant coach for the 2022 season.

Reedley College also honored Billy’s connection to its football program. A Reedley College board report remembered him as a former SARP Coordinator and assistant football coach who served as a mentor and role model to student-athletes.

The Courtroom Ending Was Complicated

William Wright III was charged with murder, but the case did not end with a murder conviction.

In May 2024, ABC30 reported that jurors found Wright III not guilty of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter. The jury could not reach a verdict on involuntary manslaughter, so the judge declared a mistrial on that lesser charge.

ABC30 also reported that Wright III bonded out of jail after the partial verdict. The outcome left the case with a complicated legal ending, while Billy’s family, players, and colleagues continued to remember his life and impact.

Why This June 15 Case Still Stands Out

The Billy Wright case remains one of Fresno’s most emotional June 15 stories because it includes a family tragedy, a respected local coach, a courtroom battle, and a verdict that did not match the original murder accusation.

For Central Valley viewers, the story also carries a larger reminder. Behind every case file is a life, a family, and a community left with questions.

Billy Wright’s name continues to be tied not only to a shooting case, but also to his work with student athletes, his time in football, and the people who say he helped them move forward.
