$1M Coalinga Xanax Seizure: 55,000 Pills Found, 2 Arrested

A major Coalinga Xanax seizure led to two arrests after California Highway Patrol officers say they discovered approximately 55,000 pills believed to be alprazolam, commonly known as Xanax, during a traffic stop in Fresno County.

Authorities estimated the suspected pills had a street value of approximately $1 million.

CHP identified the two women arrested as Patricia Cristal, 28, and Esmeralda Cristal, 26, both of Paramount. The case has since been turned over to a regional high-impact drug investigation team.

CHP Traffic Stop Near Coalinga Leads to Investigation

According to CHP, a Coalinga Area officer stopped a 2016 Honda Accord at approximately noon on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

The stop happened on State Route 198 east of Interstate 5 in Fresno County. CHP said the vehicle was initially stopped for a traffic violation.

During the encounter, the officer reportedly noticed indicators that led authorities to suspect the driver and passenger could be involved in criminal activity.

CHP said both occupants declined to consent to a search of the vehicle.

K-9 Called to Highway 198 Traffic Stop

The officer then requested assistance from a K-9 unit.

Deputies from the Kings County Sheriff’s Office responded with a narcotics-detection dog. CHP said the K-9 conducted an exterior sniff of the Honda and alerted to the vehicle.

Authorities said that alert provided probable cause for officers to search the vehicle.

CHP Says 55,000 Suspected Xanax Pills Found in Trunk

During the search, officers found two large plastic storage containers in the trunk, according to CHP.

Inside those containers were approximately 55,000 pills believed to contain alprazolam, the prescription benzodiazepine commonly sold under the brand name Xanax.

Authorities estimated the suspected drugs had a street value of roughly $1 million.

Photos released in connection with the case show large quantities of suspected pills and containers as well as a law-enforcement K-9 involved in the investigation.

It is important to note that publicly available reporting describes the pills as believed or suspected to be alprazolam. Central Valley Entertainment has not found a subsequently released laboratory report independently confirming the contents of all 55,000 pills.

Patricia Cristal and Esmeralda Cristal Arrested

CHP identified the driver as 28-year-old Patricia Cristal and the passenger as 26-year-old Esmeralda Cristal.

Both women are from Paramount, California.

Authorities arrested both women and booked them into the Fresno County Jail in connection with the discovery.

KMPH reported that the women were booked on allegations involving possession of benzodiazepines for sale, transportation for sale across noncontiguous counties and conspiracy to commit a crime.

The allegations are accusations. Neither woman should be considered guilty unless the allegations are proven in court.

Both Women Bonded Out of Fresno County Jail

According to reporting based on jail information, both Patricia Cristal and Esmeralda Cristal bonded out on September 13.

Their bail was reportedly set at $135,000 each.

As of September 21, Central Valley Entertainment has not located a newly reported conviction, plea, sentencing or other major court resolution connected to this case.

Investigation Turned Over to Fresno High Impact Investigation Team

CHP said the case was turned over to the Fresno High Impact Investigation Team, also known as HIIT.

The regional initiative brings together personnel from several local, state and federal law-enforcement agencies to investigate significant narcotics and other criminal activity in the Central Valley.

CHP’s Coalinga Area commander said the agency remains focused on intercepting illegal drugs being transported through California highways.

Why Highway 198 and Interstate 5 Matter

The traffic stop occurred along State Route 198 just east of Interstate 5, an area west of Coalinga that connects Central Valley communities with one of California’s major north-south transportation corridors.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed where the suspected pills allegedly originated, where they were headed or whether investigators believe the seizure is connected to a larger trafficking organization.

Those details remain unknown based on the public information currently available.
