I-5 Shafter Shooting: June 30 Murder Case
What Happened On June 30?
On June 30, 2025, a deadly shooting on Interstate 5 near Shafter became part of a much larger Central Valley murder investigation.
According to the California Highway Patrol, dispatchers received a report around 10 a.m. about a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 5, south of Highway 46.
When officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Alberto Garcia Hernandez Duran Jr. inside the vehicle with gunshot wounds. Emergency crews took him for medical care, but he died while being transported to the hospital.
The case did not stop there.
Investigators later said the I-5 shooting appeared to connect to a Wasco homicide from the night before. That earlier shooting killed 34-year-old Marissa Ramirez-Tellez.
A Deadly Shooting Along Interstate 5
CHP investigators said Duran was found shot inside his vehicle on June 30.
Court reporting later stated that Duran had been shot while driving. According to those reports, he pulled over and called 911 after the attack.
CHP identified 28-year-old Juan Humberto Loza of Shafter as the man accused in the I-5 shooting.
Investigators said Loza fired several shots at Duran and his vehicle. Authorities later booked Loza into the Kern County Jail on felony charges that included murder.
The Search Near Shafter
The search for Loza unfolded the next day.
On July 1, law enforcement found him near the 18800 block of Beech Avenue in Shafter. CHP said officers tried to stop Loza’s vehicle around 9:45 a.m.
Investigators said Loza ran from officers into nearby orchards near San Diego Street and Highway 43.
Law enforcement searched the area and later arrested him. CHP also said officers recovered a handgun and the suspect vehicle at the scene.
23ABC later reported that Loza pleaded not guilty to five felony charges, including first-degree murder, during a Kern County court appearance.
The Wasco Homicide Connection
The I-5 shooting gained more attention after investigators connected it to a deadly Wasco shooting from the night before.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded on June 29, 2025, to the 700 block of Wildwood Road west of Wasco for a shooting victim.
Deputies found 34-year-old Marissa Ramirez-Tellez suffering from gunshot wounds. She died at the scene.
KBAK/KBFX reported that homicide detectives later said Ramirez-Tellez was gunned down by four armed assailants.
According to KCSO information reported by KBAK/KBFX, investigators later learned that Duran was one of the armed assailants responsible for Ramirez-Tellez’s murder. Duran was then found shot to death on Interstate 5 the next day.
Court reporting described the I-5 shooting as possible retaliation for the Wasco homicide.
Arrests In The Wasco Case
The Wasco investigation also led to multiple arrests.
KBAK/KBFX reported that authorities arrested Aaron Olivas, Cynthia Murillo, Argel Barragan, and Angel Chavez in connection with the Wasco homicide investigation.
Investigators also reported major evidence seizures during the case. According to KCSO information reported by KBAK/KBFX, the investigation led to the discovery of firearms, stolen vehicles, and marijuana grows.
Authorities said they served search warrants in multiple areas, including Wasco properties and a large compound used for illegal activity.
What Is Confirmed?
CHP confirmed that Alberto Garcia Hernandez Duran Jr. was found shot inside a vehicle on southbound Interstate 5 near Highway 46 on June 30, 2025.
CHP also confirmed that Duran died while being taken to a hospital.
Authorities arrested Juan Humberto Loza in connection with the I-5 killing.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified Marissa Ramirez-Tellez as the woman killed in the Wasco shooting on June 29, 2025.
KCSO later connected the Wasco homicide investigation to the June 30 I-5 killing.
What Is Still Alleged?
The criminal charges and accusations remain allegations unless proven in court.
Investigators accused Loza in the I-5 shooting, and 23ABC reported that he pleaded not guilty to charges that included first-degree murder.
Investigators also named multiple people in connection with the Wasco homicide case. Those accusations should be treated as allegations unless a court reaches a conviction.
Why This Case Matters
This case stands out because it did not involve just one crime scene.
It began with a woman killed near Wasco. The next day, a man linked to that investigation was found shot along Interstate 5. Then, the case expanded into searches, arrests, firearms seizures, stolen vehicle discoveries, and court filings that pointed to a possible retaliation motive.
For the Central Valley, the June 30 I-5 Shafter shooting became more than a roadside homicide. It became one part of a larger Kern County murder investigation that stretched across Wasco, Shafter, and Interstate 5.
Central Valley Entertainment will continue following major crime cases across the region as new court updates, arrests, and official records become available.
