Man, 28, Shot and Killed at Grand Resort Apartments in Merced

MERCED, Calif. — Merced police are investigating a deadly shooting after a 28-year-old man was killed Tuesday night at the Grand Resort Apartments on Devonwood Drive near Meadows Avenue. Officers were called just after 9:30 p.m. for reports of gunfire and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene after officers attempted lifesaving measures, according to police and local media reports.

ABC30 reported the shooting happened at Grand Resort Apartments, while the Merced Sun-Star, citing a Merced Police Department news release, placed it on the 1200 block of Devonwood Drive. Those descriptions appear consistent with the same apartment-complex scene near Devonwood Drive and Meadows Avenue.

Merced Police Lt. Jose Barajas told ABC30 detectives believe the killing appears to be an isolated incident, adding that investigators do not currently believe the public is facing a broader ongoing threat or that anyone else is believed to be a target. Police also said it is still too early to determine whether the shooting was gang-related.

One of the newest publicly reported details came from the Merced Sun-Star: police said a blue Subaru sedan is considered a vehicle of interest in the homicide investigation. The Sun-Star also reported that no tenants at the apartment complex were injured during the shooting. ABC30 did not include those details in its report, making the Subaru lead one of the most important additional facts currently out in public reporting.

ABC30 also reported this is Merced’s sixth homicide of the year. Lt. Barajas told the station the total is above what the city is used to seeing, and said the department expanded its gang violence suppression unit in January after a string of violent crimes. According to ABC30, that effort resulted in 41 arrests in January, and the department says the unit is still working overtime and extra patrols to reduce crime.

As of the latest accessible reporting I found, police had not publicly released the victim’s name, had not released suspect information, and had not announced an arrest. Investigators are still working to determine motive, whether the case has any gang connection, and who was responsible for the shooting.

For now, the clearest public picture is this: a 28-year-old man was shot multiple times at the Grand Resort Apartments Tuesday night, he died at the scene, police believe the incident was isolated, and detectives are still trying to identify and locate whoever was involved.
