Reedley Double Murder: How a Crash Revealed the Killings of Joseph Blunt and George Duarte
What first looked like a deadly crash near Reedley soon turned into a homicide case that shocked Fresno County.
On May 12, 2014, authorities found Joseph Blunt, 38, of Santa Clara, and George Duarte, 40, of Reedley, inside an overturned car near Buttonwillow and Jefferson Avenues.
At first, investigators treated the scene as a single-vehicle crash. However, the case changed once the coroner discovered both men had actually been shot.
What Happened Near Reedley
Court records show Blunt was in the area for Mother’s Day weekend. He had been visiting family in Clovis before he later met up with George Duarte in the Reedley area on the night of May 11.
Duarte’s family last saw him late that night near the family residence on Buttonwillow. Blunt was also seen in the area shortly before midnight.
A witness later reported hearing popping sounds followed by a crash shortly after midnight. Several hours later, a driver spotted the overturned vehicle in an orchard area and called 911.
Why Investigators Realized It Was Murder
When officers first arrived, they found Blunt in the driver’s seat and Duarte in the front passenger seat. Nothing at the scene immediately made the case look like a shooting.
That changed during the autopsy.
The coroner discovered gunshot wounds. According to official case records, both men had been shot in the head at close range.
Forensic analysis later showed all four bullets came from the same gun. Investigators also noted that the lack of shell casings suggested the weapon may have been a revolver, or that casings were removed from the scene.
How Detectives Linked Eloy Romero Jr. To The Case
The major break came from a phone found inside the overturned vehicle.
Court records say the phone was registered to Eloy Romero Jr. Forensic downloads and phone records showed contact between Romero and Blunt before the killings, including messages about meeting up that night.
Investigators also found evidence that helped place Romero in the Reedley area around the time of the crime. Those phone records became a major part of the case.
Arrest, Conviction, And Sentence
Authorities later arrested Romero.
In December 2015, the Fresno County District Attorney announced that a jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder.
Jurors also found true the allegations that he committed multiple murders and used a firearm in the killings.
Romero was later sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, plus 50 years to life.
Why This Case Still Stands Out
This case still stands out because it began as something else.
At first glance, it looked like a crash on a rural road near Reedley. Instead, it turned into a carefully pieced-together double murder case built through autopsy findings, forensic evidence, and cell phone records.
Even years later, the Reedley double murder remains one of the most unsettling homicide cases tied to Fresno County.
