Suspect Dies After Kern Deputy-Involved Shooting on Highway 58 Following South Pepper Drive Shooting

KERN COUNTY, Calif. — A reported shooting in the South Pepper Drive area Friday evening ended with a suspect dead after a deputy-involved shooting on Highway 58, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say they were first called at about 5:30 p.m. on April 10 to the 500 block of South Pepper Drive for a report of a shooting.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect fled when deputies arrived. Deputies began a pursuit, but later terminated it because of unsafe driving conditions. That detail has been repeated across the accessible local coverage and in an official Kern County Sheriff’s Office release reproduced by other outlets.

Investigators then learned the suspect’s vehicle had been involved in a traffic collision on eastbound Highway 58, east of Weedpatch Highway, at about 6 p.m. At roughly the same time, a gunshot victim was privately taken to a hospital, and authorities determined that wound was connected to the original South Pepper Drive shooting call.

Deputies responded to the Highway 58 crash scene and tried to make contact with the suspect. During that contact, a deputy-involved shooting occurred, authorities said. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and no deputies were reported injured.

By late Friday night and into Saturday, one of the biggest impacts for the public was the extended Highway 58 closure. 23ABC reported that all eastbound lanes were shut down at Highway 184, also known as Weedpatch Highway, while westbound lanes were closed at Edison Road. As of 6:50 p.m. Friday, CHP said there was no estimated reopening time. 23ABC later reported westbound lanes reopened by 4:20 a.m. Saturday, and all lanes were open again by 6:25 a.m.

The sheriff’s office said KCSO homicide detectives took over the investigation. Under department policy, Kern County sheriff’s detectives investigate any use of deadly force involving department personnel, and the case is then submitted to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office for criminal review.

A nearby resident told 23ABC he realized something major was happening when helicopters began circling over the area and neighbors started watching the scene from an RV park near the highway. That account adds atmosphere to the response, but it does not change the official timeline released by investigators.

As of the latest accessible reporting I found, authorities had not publicly released the suspect’s identity, had not publicly disclosed the hospitalized victim’s condition, and had not explained what specifically happened during the final contact before deputies opened fire. That means the safest wording is that the suspect was allegedly connected to the initial South Pepper Drive shooting and later died in a deputy-involved shooting after the Highway 58 crash.
