Fresno Tower District Shooting Suspect Arrested After Police Chase and Gun Recovery
A late-night shooting in Fresno’s Tower District led police from a chaotic street scene to a pursuit on Highway 180 and eventually to three arrests.
Fresno police identified the main suspect as 27-year-old Charles Muhammad of Fresno after detectives reviewed witness statements and security video from the area, according to FOX26 and ABC30.
Shooting Reported Near Olive and Linden Avenues
Police said the shooting happened early Sunday morning near Olive Avenue and Linden Avenue in Fresno’s Tower District.
According to ABC30, Fresno police said a fight broke out around 12:30 a.m. Sunday before gunfire followed. A 32-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and later left the hospital after treatment.
FOX26 reported that officers responded after a report of gunfire and two ShotSpotter activations indicated that someone fired multiple rounds in the area. Officers found the injured man, gave him first aid, and EMS took him to the hospital.
Woman Injured During the Chaos
Police also reported that an adult woman suffered minor injuries during the panic.
FOX26 reported that the woman ran after hearing gunfire, fell, and got stepped on during the incident.
Police Say Vehicle Fled Toward Highway 180
The investigation quickly moved beyond the Tower District.
FOX26 reported that Central District Safety Team officers saw a vehicle leaving the shooting area at a high rate of speed. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled eastbound on Highway 180. Police said someone tossed a firearm from the vehicle during the pursuit.
A Fresno police airship followed the vehicle to the area of Kona Avenue and Beck Avenue, where the passengers got out and ran, according to both ABC30 and FOX26.
Three People Arrested After Search
Police later arrested three people connected to the fleeing vehicle.
ABC30 reported that Muhammad, a 19-year-old, and a 16-year-old were arrested after the pursuit. FOX26 also reported that officers recovered the discarded firearm from the highway.
Detectives Identify Charles Muhammad as Suspected Shooter
FOX26 reported that Street Violence Bureau felony assault detectives interviewed witnesses and obtained security video from the shooting area. Detectives then identified Charles Muhammad as the suspected shooter.
Police arrested Muhammad on several felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and multiple firearm-related charges, according to FOX26. ABC30 reported that he was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
Prior Gang-Related Case Mentioned by Police
ABC30 reported another detail that adds more attention to the case. Clovis police confirmed Muhammad was one of four men previously arrested in connection with a gang-related shooting outside a Clovis WinCo in April 2024.
ABC30 also reported that the prior case included charges of assault with a deadly weapon and felony child endangerment. Court records showed Muhammad pleaded no contest and was on probation, according to the station.
Police have not publicly confirmed that the new Tower District shooting was gang-motivated. At this point, the gang-related detail appears tied to Muhammad’s prior case history, not a confirmed motive in the latest shooting.
