A Fresno Night Turned Deadly On May 24
Early on the morning of May 24, 2019, a night in Fresno turned deadly after a car became trapped on railroad tracks in central Fresno.
Police said four people were inside the vehicle near the intersection of Floradora Avenue and 11th Street around 3 a.m. What happened next changed several lives in seconds.
Investigators said two men approached the vehicle while it sat partially stuck on the railroad tracks. According to reporting at the time, the encounter turned violent and gunfire erupted.
Manuel Hernandez Lopez Lost His Life
Authorities identified the victim as 24-year-old Manuel Hernandez Lopez.
Police said Lopez suffered fatal injuries during the shooting. Another male passenger reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while two women inside the vehicle escaped without physical injuries.
The Car Did Not Stop Immediately
Investigators said the vehicle continued moving after the shooting and eventually crashed into a parked white minivan nearby.
That detail created an unusual crime scene. Officers were not only investigating a homicide, but also a crash that became part of the sequence of events.
The image of a vehicle trapped on railroad tracks and then crashing moments later became one of the most memorable details from the case.
