Merced, California— Officials at Merced Middle School called the Police Department Monday afternoon after they learned a student had a gun on campus.
A report was received by Merced Weaver School Administration that said a student was showing a gun to another student, according to messages parents received.

When the report was investigated by school officials, the claims were confirmed, there was ammunition and a handgun in the student’s backpack.
It was not said whether the firearm was loaded or not.
The school did comment and mentioned that there was no immediate information that there was any intent to do harm to any staff or students.
“Any incident on campus involving the presence of a firearm is a very serious matter and a significant safety concern. The handgun was secured by the administration without incident and Merced Police were notified and responded,” said the school. “We are continuing to work with law enforcement and district leadership to ensure all students and staff are safe at Weaver Middle School.
Principal Elias Villa said, “We appreciate the students and staff that assisted in reporting and responding to this critical safety incident”
